Volunteers and local families taking part in a tree planting activity in Sinjar

Sinjar Project

A collection of local initiatives in Sinjar focused on children, learning, peacebuilding, environmental care, and practical community support.

About the Project

Local action rooted in care for Sinjar

The Sinjar Project brings together different kinds of community work into one shared story. Some activities create safe spaces for children. Others strengthen peacebuilding, support practical learning, or care for the environment. Together, they show a simple idea: meaningful change grows when people invest in their own community with consistency, dignity, and hope.

Different initiatives, one shared commitment

These activities respond to real needs in Sinjar while building a stronger sense of safety, participation, learning, and local ownership.

A safe and welcoming place for children to learn, play, and grow

Progress In Peace opened a Child Friendly Space in Sinjar as a safe and uplifting place where children can spend their time in learning, play, and positive interaction.

The purpose of this space is simple but important: to give children in Sinjar a place where they can feel welcomed, cared for, and free to explore new things. It creates room for joy, calm, and daily support in a way that feels local and personal.

As the activity continued, volunteers kept the space vibrant through creative learning, fun exercises, and supportive engagement. This helped make the space not only available, but alive with energy and belonging.

More than a room, this became a practical investment in children’s growth, confidence, and future in Sinjar.

Strengthening social cohesion through dialogue and practical peacebuilding

Progress In Peace organized a training session in Sinjar focused on peacebuilding and social cohesion as part of strengthening the community from within.

The training highlighted dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation among diverse groups in the region. Rather than treating peace as only an abstract value, the sessions connected it to real community relationships and everyday life.

Participants explored core peacebuilding values, ways to address local tensions, and practical approaches for encouraging unity and collaboration.

This kind of training matters because it equips community members with tools they can carry beyond the session itself into their own neighborhoods and relationships.

Building confidence through practical digital learning

The Basics of Computer Training Course gave participants in Sinjar the chance to keep learning practical skills in a supportive environment.

The sessions were shaped by hands-on activities, active participation, and collaborative work. This made the training more than just theory and helped learners build practical confidence step by step.

With the support of a dedicated volunteer trainer, participants kept developing their understanding of computer basics in a way that felt encouraging and useful.

This initiative reflects another side of community care in Sinjar: creating access to skills and knowledge that can open new possibilities for young people and adults alike.

Community volunteers restoring care to a public place

In the Solagh area of Sinjar, Progress In Peace organized a cleaning campaign after seeing clear signs of neglect and litter in one of the region’s known tourist spots.

The response was simple and practical: mobilize volunteers, clean visible areas, and make the space more welcoming again for people who use and visit it.

This initiative reflects an important part of the organization’s work in Sinjar — community engagement expressed through visible action. It shows care for place, shared responsibility, and respect for the environment.

Even a straightforward campaign like this carries meaning, because it reminds people that improving a community can start with showing up and taking responsibility together.

Growing a greener Sinjar together with local families

As part of its environmental initiatives, Progress In Peace continued its tree planting work in Sinjar by distributing and planting trees with local participation.

In Til Banat complex, volunteers and local families worked together to plant trees in home gardens and community spaces. That participation gave the activity a strong sense of shared ownership rather than one-sided delivery.

Every tree in this initiative carries a simple but meaningful message of renewal, resilience, and hope for the future of Sinjar.

This project shows how environmental action can also become a form of peacebuilding — caring for place, strengthening cooperation, and creating visible signs of life and continuity in the community.
